It is ten times faster than the previous USB 2.0 version. It also increases the bandwidth adding two unidirectional paths, one to receive data and another to transmit. This is a major improvement over one direction that came with USB 2.0. Other advances include power management, improved bus utilization and rotating media support.

An improvement to USB 3.0 known as USB 3.1 was introduced in July 2013 which increase the data transfer speed up to 1.25 GB per second.
